About Me, This Blog, The Internet and Server Things

I came up with a catchphrase slogan for the site which was, "When your hardware gets smelly." The idea at the time was to review tech and just write about my life. The word Smellybacon came into existence at around the same time

Hello! I'm DieNand, the owner and techie behind this tiny space on the Internet. It may seem small right now, but I believe that it is worth it to create a space like this for yourself online. Increasingly we're living in a world where the places that once made us feel free are being destroyed in the name of the bottom line. Algorithms and aggressive content moderation fuel the machines that seek nothing more than to milk us for profits. I set out to create this blog in order to, in some small way, claim back the freedom that the internet once showed me as I was growing up. I wanted to share experiences and knowledge in a space where, at least in theory, I get to control my own destiny. So... this is what I came up with.

"What is this blog about, and why the strange name!?!"

The answer to that is complicated and easy at the same time. I originally came up with the name back when I was still in high school, which is a frighteningly long time ago, and I had a blog on blogger.com. The idea at the time was to review tech and just write about my life. I came up with a catchphrase slogan for the site which was, "When your hardware gets smelly." The word Smellybacon came into existence at around the same time. I may have been hungry because I don't really know what smelly bacon has to do with technology or computer hardware, but I thought it was catchy nonetheless.  Later when I could afford to register a domain for the blog I went with smellybacon.xyz because it was pretty cheap at the time. The site never really gained any traction and to my own shame I deleted it in 2017 or 2018 and lost the backup that I had made, but I kept the URL. That was roughly the time when I discovered Ghost as well. For a couple of years after that I had several failed self-hosted blogs with the same URL, all of which I deleted when I decided that I was tired of messing with self-hosting. I couldn't get my backups to restore on the new site, so I ended up having to start fresh. That is how we came to where we are now.

"Who are you?"

A guy with many interests and hobbies all in some way related to computers.

I'm a programmer by day and I enjoy tinkering with software and playing games in my free time. My primary skill is the ability to figure stuff out, and I'm fortunate that I work a job where I can do exactly that. In my free time, I also edit videos and draw sometimes. Currently, I'm still living in South Africa, but will hopefully be leaving soon... Life does tend to do weird things with you though and you can never be sure where tomorrow will take you. I also enjoy long walks and taking photos, and I flourish in the company of cats.

If you're interested in any of the other things I mentioned, you can find me on YouTube as well where I mostly make gaming-related content and also have another channel where I make AMVs. I don't watch as much anime as I used to so finding anime to make AMVs with is hard and I wanted to focus on other projects such as the gaming channel. You can also find me on Twitch where I stream infrequently. One day I will have a regular schedule, I swear! Finally, there is also my Pixiv account where I upload my drawings.

PS: Most of my programming work is closed-source, so I'm not going to share any of that here. Haha

That's about it. Hopefully, I'll be able to write a decently large post once a month, but if not I want to write regularly enough to make the investment of paying for hosting worth it. At least the domain has other uses as well. xD

If you're interested in any of the shenanigans, even if it is just cat pics, then definitely consider signing up for update notifications. I promise to make each post worth your time. :D
